Digital Certificates for Brazilian Companies: Types, Costs and How to Get One
A digital certificate is an electronic identity that allows Brazilian companies to sign documents, file taxes, and issue invoices with legal validity. For most business types beyond MEI, having a digital certificate is either mandatory or practically essential. Understanding the options before you need one saves time and avoids costly mistakes.
What Is a Digital Certificate?
A digital certificate is issued by a Certifying Authority (Autoridade Certificadora) accredited by ICP-Brasil, the Brazilian public key infrastructure. It functions as a secure electronic signature tied to your CNPJ or CPF.
When Is It Required?
- Issuing NF-e (product invoices): Mandatory for all companies that sell goods
- Filing SPED obligations: Required for Lucro Presumido and Lucro Real companies
- Accessing e-CAC: The Receita Federal online portal for tax matters
- eSocial submissions: Digital labor and payroll obligations
- Signing contracts electronically: With full legal validity under Brazilian law
A1 vs. A3: Choosing the Right Type
| Feature | A1 Certificate | A3 Certificate |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | Software file (.pfx) installed on computer | Physical device (smart card or USB token) |
| Validity | 1 year | 1 to 3 years |
| Portability | Can be copied to multiple machines | Tied to physical device |
| Cost | R$ 150–250 per year | R$ 200–500 depending on validity |
| Best for | Companies needing automation and cloud access | Companies wanting physical security |
A1 Certificate
The A1 is stored as a digital file on your computer. It is the preferred choice for companies that use cloud accounting software, automated invoice systems, or need to install the certificate on multiple machines.
Advantages:
- Easy integration with accounting and ERP software
- No physical device to lose or damage
- Better for remote and distributed teams
A3 Certificate
The A3 is stored on a physical device — either a smart card (requires a reader) or a USB token. It offers stronger security because the private key never leaves the device.
Advantages:
- Higher security standard
- Longer validity period (up to 3 years)
- Cannot be copied or duplicated
Types of Digital Certificates by Purpose
| Certificate | Linked to | Primary use |
|---|---|---|
| e-CNPJ | Company CNPJ | Tax filings, SPED, e-CAC access |
| e-CPF | Individual CPF | Personal tax matters, signing as legal representative |
| NF-e | Company CNPJ | Specifically for issuing product invoices |
Most small businesses start with an e-CNPJ A1, which covers tax filings, invoice issuance, and government portal access.

Do MEIs Need a Digital Certificate?
MEIs (Microempreendedores Individuais) are exempt from digital certificates for most purposes. They can issue NFA-e (simplified invoices) without one. However, if a MEI hires an employee, a digital certificate becomes required for eSocial submissions.
SedeFiscal and Digital Certificates
When you register your company using a SedeFiscal fiscal address, your digital certificate will be linked to that address on your CNPJ. This is perfectly normal and accepted by all certifying authorities. SedeFiscal provides the address documentation needed during the certificate validation process.
Plan your digital certificate purchase as part of your company formation process — ideally right after your CNPJ is approved and before you need to issue your first invoice.
